Our Story
When wildfires swept through the Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and Altadena, they shook the very core of our communities. But in that moment of crisis, something powerful happened, the local female surfing community came together, united by the ocean and a deep love for the people in their communities.
On Saturday, January 11th, the Santa Monica Helping Hub officially opened its doors. What followed was nothing short of incredible. On day one, hundreds of residents showed up to donate food, clothing, toiletries, and essential supplies. Volunteers of all ages rolled up their sleeves to organize the space, creating a welcoming environment where anyone affected by the fires could find support and a little peace.
What made this effort especially meaningful was that it was led entirely by women from local surf communities, from Malibu to Venice. These women used their networks and passion to create real impact. Their leadership turned a small idea into a full scale community relief center.
The Hub quickly became more than a donation site, it became a place of healing. Families who had lost everything came not just to receive, but to give. Some volunteered. Others brought what little they could spare. Their strength and generosity became why the Santa Monica Helping Hub was so special.
With its close proximity to the front lines, the Hub also served as a critical support center for first responders and National Guard personnel. Every day, volunteers delivered supplies and requested essential items directly to the first responders.
As surfers, we’re deeply aware of the environment. The fires left behind toxic ash and debris that washed up on our beaches and into the water. Part of our mission moving forward is environmental recovery and protecting the ocean that connects us all.
The Santa Monica Helping Hub was created out of necessity, but it has grown into something lasting. It’s a place where neighbors help neighbors. Networks have been built with other relief centers in neighboring cities. We are so grateful to all of the volunteers, donors, and families who showed up for our friends and neighbors in the Palisades, Alta Dena and Malibu.
We’re here because we care for our community, for our environment, and for the place we all call home. We’ll keep showing up, one small act of kindness at a time.
